"AI-built website" can sound like a red flag — like nobody's actually checking the work. That's a fair concern, and it's not what AI-assisted development means. It's also a topic where the real research is more nuanced than either the marketing hype or the skepticism suggests — so here's what actually changes when a studio builds this way, what the current data really shows, and what doesn't change no matter which tools are involved.
What "AI-Assisted Development" Actually Means
It means developers use AI coding tools to write and scaffold code faster — the same way a carpenter uses a power drill instead of a hand screwdriver. The tool speeds up the mechanical parts of the work. It does not mean a prompt is typed in and a finished website comes out unreviewed. A developer still designs the architecture, makes the technical decisions, and reviews every piece of code the tooling produces.
What Doesn't Change
- Code review. Every change is still reviewed by a person before it ships — AI-generated code isn't exempt from scrutiny, if anything it gets checked more carefully.

The data on AI coding tools is genuinely mixed, and a trustworthy answer has to engage with that instead of picking only the flattering numbers. Stack Overflow's 2025 Developer Survey found 84% of developers now use or plan to use AI tools, up from 76% the year before — but trust in AI output accuracy actually fell, from 40% to 29%. The top frustration developers reported: AI solutions that are "almost right, but not quite," with 66% saying they spend more time than expected fixing that near-miss code.
Separately, a widely-discussed 2025 randomized controlled trial from METR found that experienced open-source developers using AI tools on real tasks were actually about 19% slower — despite believing beforehand that AI would make them roughly 20% faster. That gap between perceived speed and actual speed is the single most important finding in this space: AI tools can feel faster while making the work slower, if they're used without the discipline to catch and fix the "almost right" output Stack Overflow's survey describes.
Research from McKinsey adds useful nuance to where the real gains are: AI tools cut time on routine, well-understood tasks by roughly 46%, but deliver under 10% time savings on genuinely complex work. That tracks with how these tools actually function — fast on boilerplate, unreliable as a substitute for judgment on hard problems. (GitHub's own published research on Copilot claims 55.8% faster task completion in their testing — worth knowing, though as vendor-published data it should be weighed differently than independent research.)
Why the Difference Comes Down to Process, Not the Tool
Put together, this research points to one conclusion: AI coding tools don't automatically make a team faster — they make an undisciplined team feel faster while actually slower, and they make a disciplined team genuinely faster on the routine work that used to eat their time. The METR study's slowdown wasn't caused by the AI tooling itself; it's consistent with developers accepting "almost right" suggestions without the review process to catch what's wrong with them. That's a process failure, not a tooling failure — and it's exactly the failure mode a studio with real code review and QA built into every project is structured to avoid.
Why It's Not Riskier — When the Process Is There
The risk in any web project was never really about which tools were used to write the code — it's about whether the result is reviewed, tested, and maintained properly. A slow, entirely hand-typed project with no real QA process is riskier than a fast, AI-assisted project that's rigorously reviewed and tested. The tooling isn't the safety mechanism; the process around it is. Given how mixed the research above is, that process is arguably more important with AI-assisted development than without it, not less.
What to Ask a Studio That Claims AI-Assisted Development
Given the research, the useful question isn't "do you use AI tools" — most developers now do, per the Stack Overflow data above. It's about process: Does every piece of AI-generated code get reviewed by a person before it ships? What does testing actually look like, not just "we tested it"? Who's accountable if something's wrong after launch? A studio that can answer those specifically, rather than just asserting "AI makes us faster," is the one whose process is actually built to capture the real gains this research shows are possible — without the near-miss-code slowdown the same research warns about.
What This Means for Your Project
In practice: you get a site built to the same standard you'd expect from a traditional agency, on a timeline and budget that fits a small business rather than an enterprise. Nothing about the review, testing, or final quality bar changes — the tools that get there just move faster on the mechanical work, freeing up time for the judgment calls that actually determine whether a site is good.
