"Make sure your site is fast" has been generic SEO advice for years. What's changed is that Google now measures "fast" with three specific, named metrics — and as of a March 2026 core update, they're folded into a hard ranking factor rather than a soft signal you could mostly ignore.

Core Web Vitals are three separate measurements, each covering a different part of what "feels slow or broken" actually means to a visitor:

  • INP (Interaction to Next Paint). How quickly the page responds when someone actually does something — clicks a button, taps a menu, fills in a field. This replaced an older metric (First Input Delay) because it measures responsiveness across the whole visit, not just the very first click.
  • CLS (Cumulative Layout Shift). Whether things move around while the page loads — the classic case of trying to tap a button and having an image load in above it, shifting everything down at the exact wrong moment.

All three are measuring the same underlying thing from different angles: does this site feel solid and responsive, or janky and unpredictable?

Core Web Vitals have been a known ranking signal for a while, but a March 2026 core update rolled the three metrics into a composite performance score that now sits directly alongside content signals in ranking — not behind them as a tiebreaker used only when everything else was equal. The practical difference: sites that don't meet the current thresholds are now seeing measurable drops in organic visibility, not just a small, hard-to-notice disadvantage.

For a small business competing on a local search term, this isn't an abstract technical detail — it can be the actual difference between showing up when someone searches for what you do nearby and not showing up at all. For highly competitive keywords, Core Web Vitals scores often function as a tiebreaker between two otherwise similarly optimized pages. For less competitive local searches, fixing a poor score can produce a noticeable ranking improvement within weeks, precisely because there's less competition for the algorithm to weigh against it.

There's a real business-outcome layer underneath the ranking impact, too: a one-second delay in page load time can reduce conversions by roughly 7%. Even a visitor who does find you through a slow, janky site is measurably less likely to actually convert once they land.

What Actually Causes Poor Scores

In practice, the most common causes are unoptimized images (the single biggest LCP culprit on most small-business sites), render-blocking scripts that delay when the page becomes interactive, web fonts that shift layout as they load, ads or embeds that inject content after the initial page paint, and — very commonly on older or template-based sites — simply too much unnecessary code being loaded on every page regardless of whether it's used.

What Actually Fixes It

None of this requires guesswork — Google's own PageSpeed Insights and Search Console report your real, measured scores against the current thresholds, not an estimate. The fixes that move the needle most are: serving properly sized and compressed images instead of a full-resolution file scaled down in the browser, reserving space for images and ads before they load so nothing shifts, deferring or removing scripts that aren't needed for the initial page paint, and building on a modern framework that handles this correctly by default rather than fighting a page-builder's bloat after the fact.
